
Here's the challenge
(I'm sure you can relate!):
BD is ambiguous - there is no agreed upon definition for business development in professional services. Leadership at each firm defines it differently, from origination to enablement, internal and external responsibilities, it can create frustration and misaligned expectations.
The BD role is unique to every firm - depending on the size and sophistication of the firm, every role is different. Some are more focused on supporting your people through administration and proposals, others are solely focused on origination, while the majority have a hybrid internal and external role.
There is no BD playbook - while there is great training, coaching, and resources out there, it's tough to find how to build your own role while managing up and down the organization. These roles are frequently poorly managed as the hire is required to be a self-starter and figure it out.
Diverse BD Backgrounds - most of us didn't choose BD, it chose us. So we come from different backgrounds - sales, marketing, former professional, recruiting, communications, etc. Our backgrounds have prepped us somewhat for the role, but executing successfully for this role requires us to learn new skills and develop new habits.
